Originally, the Swiss company, founded in 1970, produced lamps for workshops. Ten years later, the core business changed to the development and production of designer lamps for living and working spaces. Production of lamps for workshops was discontinued.
When designing and developing its lighting solutions, the company focused on experimental innovation from the outset. In doing so, the company was always willing to take the associated risks. Its collaboration with the now deceased Swiss designer Hannes Wettstein was groundbreaking. In collaboration with this designer, lamps such as ‘Snodo’ and ‘Ball’ were created. Belux's international breakthrough occurred in 1982, thanks to ‘Metro’, the world's first low-voltage cable system. In the same year, Belux took over the licence to produce extravagant furniture and objects from the leading Italian designer group Memphis of Ettore Sottsass and Michele de Lucchi, among others.
In 1984, Belux encouraged innovation with an international lamp design competition. The jury, which included leading figures such as Achille Castiglioni and Trix and Robert Haussmann, judged more than 400 designs by young designers. ‘Tubo’ by Jo Niemeyer emerged as the favourite in this. Swiss designer Benjamin Thut's table lamp ‘Lifto’ emerged from this competition. Shortly afterwards, this lamp was successfully taken into series production at Belux. Today, the lamp is among the true classics.
In 2001, Belux became part of the Vitra Group, allowing the company to come into direct contact with other internationally renowned designers. In collaboration with Frank Gehry, Naoto Fukasawa, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, Herzog & de Meuron and Hella Jongerius, remarkable, poetic designs such as ‘Cloud’, ‘Lantern’, ‘Jingzi’ and ‘Blossom’ were created. The same period saw the creation of ‘Twilight’ in collaboration with John and Samantha Ritschl-Lassoudry and the light sculpture ‘One By One’ by sculptor Steve Lechot.
